Minnie Evans is the embodiment of the visionary artist. She is an African American painter of Wilmington, N.C., who has created a world of mythical animals, religious symbols and natural beauty. The film explores the sources of Minnie Evans' art--Airlie Garden, with its magnificent azaleas and swans, where Minnie worked as a gate keeper for 27 years and where she did most of her paintings. Scenes of a service in her African-Methodist church draw the connections between her religious fervor and her art. She tells about her mystical visions and traces her slave ancestry to her great grandmother's grandmother who was brought from Trinidad and sold as a slave in North Carolina. We see Minnie with her 101 year old mother and at the Evans' family reunion of six generations. Minnie Evans was 91 years old when this film was made in 1983. She died December 16, 1987 at age 95.

Some 100 people, many of them seeking religious freedom in the New World, set sail from England on the Mayflower in September 1620. That November, the ship landed on the shores of Cape Cod, in present-day Massachusetts. A scouting party was sent out, and in late December the group landed at Plymouth Harbor, where they would form the first permanent settlement of Europeans in New England. These original settlers of Plymouth Colony are known as the Pilgrim Fathers, or simply as the Pilgrims. (02:37)

From EsoCast. Look closely and see a meteor shower captured in this series of time lapse shots. On 14--16 December 2012, the Geminid meteor shower made a spectacular appearance over ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. As the meteors showered down over the site, photographer Gianluca Lombardi spent over 40 hours recording it.
The Geminids is a shower of shooting stars appearing to emanate from within the constellation of Gemini (The Twins). This shower occurs when the Earth cuts through the orbit of an asteroid named 3200 Phaethon, which happens once each year, in December. Particles in the trail of dust along the orbit of Phaethon burn up in our atmosphere, creating the brilliant, fast-moving points of light characteristic of meteor showers. (03:05)

Although Beethoven had performed his 4th Piano Concerto privately, in 1807, the public did not hear it until the 22nd of December, 1808. On that night they also heard four hours of new music in a cold concert hall (the heating system had failed to work properly). After he personally played this concerto at the December 1808 concert, Beethoven never publicly performed with an orchestra again.
In this clip, we see Murray Perahia playing the last movement of Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto with Sir Colin Davis conducting the New York Philharmonic. (9:09)
Perhaps because of those factors - or maybe because the 4th was so different from Beethoven's first three concertos for solo piano and orchestra - the work was never publicly performed again in Beethoven's lifetime

The last months of Beethoven's life were eventful. On the 29th of July, 1826, his nephew Karl tried to commit suicide. He survived a self-inflicted shot to his head. Already ill himself, Beethoven accepted his brother Johann's invitation to visit his estate at Gneixendorf (in lower Austria). A two-day journey from Vienna, Beethoven thought the change of scenery would be good for Karl.
The brothers, however, had serious arguments - on various issues - and Ludwig decided to abruptly leave on December 1, 1826. The only vehicle available for his return was an open milk cart. Disregarding what that could mean, during the frigid weather, Ludwig decided to proceed anyway. He fell ill during the journey.
Arriving home, in Vienna, Beethoven rarely left his bed. Advancing liver disease created fluid build-ups in his abdomen, causing him to suffer greatly. Beethoven died, in his Vienna apartment, on the 26th of March, 1827. He was fifty-six years old. (09:36)

On December 22, 1808, Beethoven starred in one of the most important concerts of his life. It took place at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna.
The rehearsal - there was only one, despite so much new music - did not go well. Because of his increasing deafness, Beethoven's conducting style had become unpredictably erratic. At times, the musicians simply put down their instruments, refusing to continue. Despite all the rehearsal difficulties, the concert came together with relatively few mistakes.
Four hours long, it featured eight of Beethoven's works, including the first public performances of the Sixth Symphony (also known as the Pastoral), the Fifth Symphony and the Fourth Piano Concerto (which Beethoven personally performed).
After this concert, Beethoven would never play the piano in public again. (9:54)

On the 17th of December, 1808, an announcement appeared in a Vienna newspaper. It told the public that Ludwig van Beethoven would give a concert, at the Theater an der Wien, in five days. It said, among other things: "All the pieces are of his own composition, entirely new, and not yet heard in public."
In this clip, recorded in 1989, we see Krystian Zimerman performing Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto with Leonard Bernstein conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker. (9:09)
It was a really long concert - four hours - which took place in a very cold concert hall. Another composer, J. F. Reichardt, attended.
