Ecological Pyramids
From YouTube, produced by TutorVista
An ecological pyramid (or trophic pyramid) is a graphical representation designed to show the biomass or productivity at each trophic level in a given ecosystem. Biomass pyramids show the abundance or biomass of organisms at each trophic level, while productivity pyramids show the production or turnover in biomass. Ecological pyramids begin with producers on the bottom (such as plants) and proceed through the various trophic levels (such as herbivores that eat plants, then carnivores that eat herbivores, then carnivores that eat those carnivores, and so on). The highest level is the top of the food chain. In Ecological Pyramid the arrangements from below is producers then primary consumers then secondary consumers and on the top is decomposers. (04:03)

Safety-Snake Awareness-Arkansas Snakes
From YouTube, produced by ARextension
Summer hiking can be a relaxing way to get in tune with nature. But snakes along the trail can quickly dampen your spirits. Knowing where they typically roam as well as how to avoid them will help you stay Snake Aware. Dr. Becky McPeake, Wildlife, gives you tips on how to avoid snakes when you're out in the woods. This is a good teaching resource for a lesson/unit on reptiles, animal habits, and/or food chains. It is also beneficial in teaching adults and children to identify venomous and non-venomous snakes. This video discusses snakes found in Arkansas. (3:44)

The Everglades
From pbslearningmedia.org, produced by Thirteen/WNET New York
In this video segment from WILD TV, learn about the Florida Everglades, a giant wetland that is the habitat of many different species of animals. One of the animals featured in the video is the pig frog, named for the sound they make which is similar to a pig’s grunt. They contribute substantially to the ecosystem of the Everglades. Their permeable skin helps reflect toxins in the ecosystem. Scientists are studying pig frogs because they believe the frogs act as indicators of the health of the Everglades. As part of the food chain for the region, they affect the health of local birds and other predators as well. (06:25)
