John Green discussed where American politicians come from. In the beginning, soon after the U.S. Constitution was adopted, politics were pretty non-existent. George Washington was elected president with no opposition, everything was new and exciting, and everyone just got along. For several months, anyway. (13:57)

Watch this book trailer video for Laurie Keller's Birdy's Smile Book, a picture book for children about one little girl with one BIG message: Smile! It makes you happy, and it makes other people happy as well. This trailer will make you smile ear to ear!
Birdy starts every day by smiling at herself in the mirror. She says you can smile while doing just about anything--brushing your teeth, taking out the garbage, or eating broccoli. Okay, maybe not while eating broccoli. Even people with bad teeth (like our first president, George Washington) should show their toothy grins because there's no such thing as a bad smile. So heed Birdy's advice and practice your smile—you'll need it while reading this book!

Today, Craig is going to dive into the history of American political parties. So throughout most of United States history our political system has been dominated by a two-party system, but the policies and the groups that support these parties have changed drastically throughout history. There have been five, arguably six, party systems since the election of John Adams in 1796 (George Washington’s presidency was an unusual case, and we’ll get to that), so we’ll look at the supporters and policies of each of the parties during these eras and look at how historical contingencies cause these policy shifts. We’ll also talk a bit about the benefit of a third party, which although rarely ever wins, helps to influence political debate. (10:48)

Understanding how we define normalcy--the life of a twelve-year-old autistic boy.GEORGE (2000) directed by Corra and Grahame Weinbren is described by Amy Taubin in The Village Voice as “an exceptionally intelligent and moving documentary that explores Corra’s twelve year old autistic son George, who uses his own video camera to make a movie within the movie. In fact, the film is about how we define normalcy.” GEORGE had its American theatrical premiere at The Screening Room, New York City and was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., The Gaga Film Festival, Berlin, Germany and aired on HBO in July 2000.(1:26:24)

'A Trip to the Moon' is a 1902 French black-and-white silent science-fiction film. The film was written and directed by Georges Melies and is best-known of the hundreds of fantasy films he made. This film is one of the first to utilize special effects, including the iconic shot of the rocket landing in the moon's eye. This video would be an excellent accompaniment to the study of the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret. (10:29)

In this Sesame Street video, George Lopez, Elmo, and Abby Cadabby explain the word "liquid". A liquid is something that flows and takes the shape of any container it is in. They pour orange juice and milk into other containers to show how liquid takes the shape of the container it is in. This is a fun resource to introduce a new vocabulary word into the elementary classroom. (01:32)

This video from Curious George introduces students to the importance of skins, peels, and other fruit coverings, which help protect a fruit's precious cargo: seeds. Seeds are a plant's offspring. For plants to survive, they must distribute their seeds in places where they stand a good chance of growing. Fruits are part of a plant's reproductive strategy. The teacher explains to the students that ripe fruit is more attractive to animals. This is important, as fruit-eating animals transport seeds contained inside fruit to other places, where they are deposited and subsequently germinate. Closed captioning included. Run time 01:26.
