Evidence has been accumulating for several decades that many galaxies harbor central mass concentrations that may be in the form of black holes with between a few million to a few billion time the mass of the Sun.
In this public lecture, Professor Genzel discusses measurements over the last two decades, employing high resolution infrared and radio imaging and spectroscopy on large ground-based telescopes that prove the existence of such a massive black hole in the centre of our Milky Way, beyond any reasonable doubt. These data also provide key insights into its properties and environment.
Future interferometric studies of the Galactic Center black hole promise to be able to test gravity in its strong field limit. Professor Genzel also briefly summarizes the cosmological evolution of massive black holes.
This event is brought to you by the Australian Institute of Physics and the Black Hole Society, and took place on Monday 27 July 2009. (1:08:04)

The last months of Beethoven's life were eventful. On the 29th of July, 1826, his nephew Karl tried to commit suicide. He survived a self-inflicted shot to his head. Already ill himself, Beethoven accepted his brother Johann's invitation to visit his estate at Gneixendorf (in lower Austria). A two-day journey from Vienna, Beethoven thought the change of scenery would be good for Karl.
The brothers, however, had serious arguments - on various issues - and Ludwig decided to abruptly leave on December 1, 1826. The only vehicle available for his return was an open milk cart. Disregarding what that could mean, during the frigid weather, Ludwig decided to proceed anyway. He fell ill during the journey.
Arriving home, in Vienna, Beethoven rarely left his bed. Advancing liver disease created fluid build-ups in his abdomen, causing him to suffer greatly. Beethoven died, in his Vienna apartment, on the 26th of March, 1827. He was fifty-six years old. (09:36)

Joseph F. Smith was the sixth prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in that position for seventeen years. Born on November 13, 1838, to Hyrum (Joseph Smith's brother) and Mary Fielding Smith, he experienced upheaval and hardships early in life. In September of 1848, the family arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. A few years later, at 13, Joseph F. Smith was baptized as a member of the Church. In July 1866, at only 27 years old, he was ordained as an apostle and served as a counselor to President Brigham Young. He was also concerned about promoting a good family environment and instituted the weekly home evening program. He also received the revelation now found in Doctrine and Covenants section 138, concerning the Savior's visit to the spirits of the dead while his body was in the tomb 138. In November 1918 at 80 years old, Joseph F. Smith passed away.
