Les Blues de Balfa
From folkstreams.net, produced by Aginsky Productions with Les Films Cinetrie and Les Films d'Ici
A portrait of Southwestern Louisana's Balfa Brothers, ambassadors of traditional Cajun music to the world. Filmed in Louisiana between 1978 and 1981, the film focuses on the surviving brother fiddler Dewey Balfa and his efforts to continue playing and performing his family's traditional music after the sudden death of his brothers Rodney and Will in a traffic accident.
We met Dewey and Rodney Balfa in 1978 while filming Homemade American Music at a folk music festival with Mike Seeger and Alice Gerrard. Dewey and Rodney invited us down to visit them in Basile and Mamou Louisiana, but before we could get there, Rodney and Will had died together in a car crash. Dewey was devasted, and together, Tracy Schwarz who was a visitor there at the same time, we worked to revive Dewey's spirits, helping out as we could. This tragedy became a central part of the film. In Les Blues De Balfa, Dewey introduces his daughter Christine who was 12 at the time and now has her own family and her own band. --Yasha Aginsky, filmmaker.

Hurricane Katrina makes landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana, as a Category 4 hurricane on this day in 2005. Despite being only the third most powerful storm of the 2005 hurricane season, Katrina was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States. After briefly coming ashore in southern Florida on August 25 as a Category 1 hurricane, Katrina gained strength before slamming into the Gulf Coast on August 29. In addition to bringing devastation to the New Orleans area, the hurricane caused damage along the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama, as well as other parts of Louisiana. (02:06)

In 1948, Robert Flaherty was working on "The Louisiana Story." He was searching for a small boat, or "pirogue" for his young hero. Flaherty soon became aware that pirogue-making was a disappearing art. Finally, when he found Ebdon Allemon, a Cajun craftsman, he persuaded him to make the pirogue. It may well have been the last piroque made in Louisiana. This is a record of that event.

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "The Name of the Star" by Maureen Johnson. Louisiana native Rory Deveaux expected things to be different in London. What she wasn't expecting was to step off the plane to Ripper-mania. Brutal murders are being committed around the city, and it's as though Jack the Ripper himself has risen from the dead to commit them. When the murderer strikes close to home, Rory finds herself drawn into a web of secret organizations and ghostly happenings--and more intrigue than she, or her fellow boarding school students, ever expected. This book's crackling plot and shocking ending will have you waiting for the next installment in the "Shades of London" series. This is a great resource to help entice and to encourage upper level readers. (1:27)

Yale researchers who have studied hundreds of kindergartners for nearly 40 years say one in five was dyslexic. But perhaps their most important finding: There is no link at all between dyslexia and intelligence. Susan Spencer reports on efforts to help those with dyslexia "crack the code," from students at a Louisiana school catering to dyslexic children, to a new law to help the high percentage of prison inmates who have dyslexia.
