Dunk Tank is a math-themed game show created by the producers of Cyberchase and starring Harry from Cyberchase For Real. Using a combination of video and interactive gaming, each program addresses a single topic in the 6th grade math curriculum and students compete with themselves for high scores. Dunk Tank is an independent learning experience for students to complete in 15-30 minutes, depending on their proficiency, and can also be used to support teacher-led instruction. In this interactive, Harry explains key concepts about circles including: parts of a circle, how to calculate diameter and circumference and pi. Students play Find Tuffy, a mini-game that challenges students to measure and use the radii of circles to find a missing dog; watch a light-hearted video highlighting confusion between a circle’s diameter and its circumference; and answer other questions designed to help them further their understanding of circles. Students can access support using a glossary, defining key math terms, and a menu of short segments to re-watch.

This music video is to the tune of Eminem's "Lose Yourself" and teaches about the concept of Pi. Lyrics are not included on the screen but can be found at www.teachpi.org. The lyrics in the chorus are, "You better lose yourself in the digits of pi. It's a high but you got a thousand more to go. The numbers do not stop or drop into pattern, no. To memorize it would take most of a lifetime." (04:26)

In this video, Sal Khan discusses and demonstrates basic addition and subtraction of fractions. Like and unlike denominators are included in his examples. Fraction pies are also used to help explain each fraction. Examples include 1/4 + 1/4, 1/4 + 1/2, and 1/2 - 1/3. Negative numbers are included at the end of the video. Mr. Khan uses the Paint Program (with different colors) to illustrate his points. Sal Khan is the recipient of the 2009 Microsoft Tech Award in Education. (09:49)

This module explores the brain’s potential for storage-as-memory. Rajan Mahadevan, a “super-memorist,” demonstrates his phenomenal memory by scanning a 7 by 7 matrix of digits and recalling all forty-nine digits forward, backward, and by columns. He also claims to have memorized 100,000 digits of pi. Mahadevan offers suggestions to help college students improve their study habits when learning new material.

The two-minute video is about circumference. This video explains that one way to separate circles is by their circumference, different size circles have different size circumference. Circumference is the distance around a circle. The ratio of the circumference of a diameter is pi= c/d. The video moves slowly and students should be able to follow it after the terms have been explained and practice.

Note: The viewer must have or install Windows Media Player. This five-minute animation about Photosynthesis moves quickly and the instructor in action should have a word list as the video uses very difficult scientific words. A few key vocabulary words include: ATP, ADP, Pi, electron transport train, hydrogen ions, water molecules, cytochrome b6f, ferredoxin NADP reductase, ATP synthase, and plastoquinone Qb. A text version of the narrative is also included on the website. (04:55)

Who built the pyramids? The colossal geometric monuments found at Giza and elsewhere in Egypt are some of Earth’s most impressive constructions. Pyramids are truly wonders of the ancient and modern world.
But when the pyramids were built, the ancient Egyptians hadn’t invented the wheel, developed bronze tools, or discovered pi. How were they able to stack two million stone blocks, each weighing more than two tons, into precise geometric alignments that would survive more than 4,000 years and capture the imaginations of explorers throughout history? They did it the same way we always have: by trial and error. The true history of the pyramids is one of experimentation and science, not magic… or aliens. (05:53)

Mark Torchin, a marine ecologist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama, talks about how he studies the parasites of invasive marine animals such as snails. Living and working on the Panama Canal, an epicenter of marine shipping, brings a massive influx and variety of invasive marine species that researchers like Mark can study and understand. Much of Mark's research focuses on biological invasions and the dynamics between the host, the parasites and the surrounding ecosystem. (02:34)
