This short video gives excellent real life, close up footage of Fairy Shrimp moving through the water. The fairy shrimp is a beautiful, translucent crustacean, which lacks a carapace, and is considered to be rather primitive as it has a relatively large number of segments and the legs are not specialized. The body is elongated, and bears 11 pairs of legs fringed with bristles. This is a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. (0:36)

This short video gives excellent real life, close up footage of a Common Shrimp probing sediment for food. The common shrimp, also known as the brown shrimp, is cryptically colored; it is brown and covered with tiny flecks. Although most specimens tend to measure between 30 and 50 mm in length, some may grow to 90 mm. The carapace extends between the eyes into a short spine, and the flexible abdomen terminates in a tail fan (known as a 'telson'). This is a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. (0:40)

This short video gives excellent real life, close up footage of a Nassau Grouper being cleaned by a shrimp. The Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus) is one of the larger reef fish and one that has suffered a dramatic decline during the 20th Century, primarily as a result of over fishing. These large groupers have a robust, oblong body; the background colour varies from light buff to pinkish red, depending on depth. This is a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. (Less Than 2 Minutes)

Watch biologist search for the legendary Knysna seahorse, a fish in which the male actually gives birth to their young. This is the rarest seahorse and lives only in South Africa. There are only about 35 species of seahorses. These fish are extremely fragile. They only eat live brine shrimp and are sensitive to small changes in their habitats. This is a rotifer (the Latin word meaning “wheel-bearer.”). They are “microscopic aquatic animals… found in many freshwater environments and in moist soil, where they inhabit the thin films of water that are formed around soil particles.” Though they can get bigger, they’re usually around 0.1–0.5 mm long. These rotifers are feeding… according to the video notes, the first one has a cell caught in a vortex caused by the two sets of cilia near its mouth. “Rotifers play a key role in filtering out the decomposing organic matter contained in water. And those rotifers, in turn, make nice snacks for fish, shrimp and crabs. A single drop of pond water might contain 50 to 100 rotifers.” (01:10)

How can a farmer and a cornfield in the midwest affect the fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico? In this video segment adapted from the independent film Big River: A King Corn Companion, the filmmakers explain how agricultural runoff from the Midwest has contributed to a massive "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico. A cornfield treated with conventional chemical fertilizer promises a bumper crop, but chemical runoff from the farm enters the Iowa River, eventually draining into the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. In the Gulf, these dissolved nutrients allow algae to flourish. The algae's decay depletes the water of oxygen, creating a dead zone where shrimp and fish are starved of oxygen and die. Closed captioning included. Run time 02:41.
