From June 2002 to early October 2011, the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) on the Aqua satellite provided a wealth of data about the Earth's water cycle. Among the many variables calculated from AMSR-E data are sea surface temperature, atmospheric water vapor, rainfall, Arctic and Antarctic sea ice coverages, and snow cover. (03:58)

Large structures, like bridges, buildings, and dams, must endure tremendous forces, starting with their own weight. Of course, added to this are externally applied forces, including vehicular and pedestrian traffic, furniture and equipment, and natural elements like wind, snow, and rain. This interactive activity from the Building Big Web site describes some of the forces, or loads, that structures endure and illustrates the damaging effects these forces sometimes have.

This milk jug igloo was part of a unit on snow. It took 3 weeks to
collect the 428 milk jugs used to make the igloo. It is a built on a
cardboard base and the jugs are connected with high temperature hot
glue. The finished igloo is about 5' tall and easily fits eight to 10
children, who like to spend their reading time in the igloo. Total
investment: $12 for the glue sticks. There are additional tips and suggestions available on "How to Build a Milk Jug Igloo" on Squidoo.com at http://www.squidoo.com/milk-jug-igloo. You'll also find useful related links like coloring pages, books to read, media coverage of schools and libraries that have built such igloos and so forth. (08:36)

Throughout history, art has helped reveal the climate around us and highlight our fragile relationship to it. We look at navigational charts from the Marshall Islands, Katsushika Hokusai’s "Under the Wave off Kanagawa", Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s "Hunters in the Snow", Mali's Great Mosque of Djenné, the Ise Shrine in Japan, steadily sinking Venice, the cave paintings of Lascaux, and Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty, among others.
