The Truth About Diamonds
From YouTube, produced by Today I Found Out
In this video: "An expensive meal at a fancy restaurant, a declaration of romance, and a big, fat diamond ring - this is a pretty standard formula for an engagement proposal. After all, it has been ingrained in all of us that a diamond ring equals love and the bigger the diamond, the more love there must be. Well, believe it or not, diamonds really aren’t all that rare. In fact, the reason diamonds cost so much is more due to savvy (and, sometimes unethical) business practices and incredibly successful advertising campaigns than the actual inherent value of the stone based on supply and demand, something anyone who has actually tried to sell a diamond quickly comes to realize. Here now is the story of how and why we all fell in love with diamonds." (12:30)

The Truth about the Hundred Years War
From YouTube, produced by Captivating History
Knights and battles, princesses and castles, sieges and warrior prophets who lead the way to victory upon shining white horses: all of these feel like the stuff of myths and legends. Yet the story of the Hundred Years' War contains all of these things, and it is a story that is entirely true.
The story of this war is made fascinating by its setting, but it is made inspiring by its characters. The Hundred Years' War changed the language, national identity, weaponry, and even the way that people think about war. There are many lessons to be learned from this war. Its tale is a cautionary one, but it is also a tale of adventure, battle, hope, and divine intervention. It's the tale of a war unlike any other. (16:02)

Lessons From Thin Air
From learner.org, produced by Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics

Just about everyone will agree that trees are made from sunlight, water, and soil the trees suck up from their roots. But the surprising truth is that trees are made from air! Trees are solar-powered machines that convert air into wood. Why is it that, despite the fact that photosynthesis is one of the most widely taught subjects in science, so few people really understand the central idea underlying this system? Starting with this question, program two explores why something taught in school can go unlearned and shows that we often teach without regard to what children actually need to know.

Pocahontas Revealed
From pbslearningmedia.org, produced by WGBH Educational Foundation
This video segment adapted from NOVA tells a historical version of what may have happened when John Smith was captured by the Powhatan people, and then was rescued by Native American princess Pocahontas. Although one of Smith's later accounts of the event introduced the now popular belief that Pocahontas rescued Smith for romantic love, historians also look to his earlier, different account to try to determine what really happened. One version that some historians believe may be closer to the truth is that Pocahontas was playing her appointed role in an adoption ritual. When she "rescued" Smith, she was actually adopting him into the tribe as her brother and Chief Powhatan's son. (2:30)

Westward Expansion: Crash Course US History #24
From YouTube, produced by crashcourse
John Green talks about the Wild, Wild, West, which as it turns out, wasn't as wild as it seemed in the movies. When we think of the western expansion of the United States in the 19th century, we're conditioned to imagine the loner. The self-reliant, unattached cowpoke roaming the prairie in search of wandering calves, or the half-addled prospector who has broken from reality thanks to the solitude of his single-minded quest for gold dust. While there may be a grain of truth to these classic Hollywood stereotypes, it isn't a very big grain of truth. Many of the pioneers who settled the west were family groups. Many were immigrants. Many were major corporations. The big losers in the westward migration were Native Americans, who were killed or moved onto reservations. Not cool, American pioneers. (12:44)
