Django Reinhardt was a pioneering virtuoso Belgian jazz guitarist and composer. Often regarded as the first important European jazz musician who made major contributions to the development of the idiom, he is also revered by guitarists worldwide as among the foremost exponents of the instrument. Reinhardt invented an entirely new style of jazz guitar technique (sometimes called 'hot' jazz guitar) that has since become a living musical tradition within French gypsy culture. "Minor Swing" is a popular Gypsy jazz tune by Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. It was first recorded by The Quintet of the Hot Club of France in 1937. It was recorded four other times throughout Reinhardt's career and is considered to be one of his most covered compositions, as well as Gypsy jazz standard. *summary taken from Wikipedia. (02:05)

In this video, teenage students will be introduced to "God Went to Beauty School" by Cynthia Rylant. Summary--Some people might call "God Went to Beauty School" a book about God, but don't be so quick to categorize this collection of poetry. Sure, the humor and surprise in these poems often come from the fact that Cynthia Rylant has chosen to imagine the everyday details of this world from the perspective of the Divine. But these poems are also about new ways of seeing—and about how a creator might celebrate his work. In other words, you don't need to be remotely religious to enjoy Rylant's poetry, but don't be surprised if it leaves you feeling downright divine. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:25)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "Destroy All Cars" by Blake Nelson. Summary Review--James Hoff is a teen on a mission. He's determined to save a planet that's choking on carbon emissions and out-of-control consumerism. He's also determined to win back the one person who understands him: His ex-girlfriend Sadie. The problem is, getting Sadie back might be even harder than overthrowing the oil companies. "Destroy All Cars" chronicles James' junior year crusades in essays, internet quizzes, and general rants. Which is to say that what this book lacks in plot, it makes up for in a compelling and often hilariously authentic teen voice—the voice of a guy who just wants to make a difference (and to get the girl, too). This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:28)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "Walk Two Moons" by Sharon Creech. Summary Review--All Sal wants is to get her mother back. And to return to the farm she loves in Bybanks, Kentucky. And to get away from her horrible new life in horrible Euclid, Ohio. OK, so, Sal wants a lot. And as you can probably guess, she's not going to get it all. But what Sal is going to get is a road trip with her grandparents that will help her come to terms with the losses and the changes that are part of growing up. This cleverly-constructed story has lots of lessons about letting go and getting back, but it's also just an eccentric, one-of-a-kind journey that you'll be glad you went on, too. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:21)

In this Pick of the Week Video, teenage students will be introduced to "The Grimm Legacy" by Polly Shulman. Summary--In true Cinderella fashion, Elizabeth Rew has been having a lousy time at home ever since her dad got remarried and her semi-evil stepsisters gobbled up the family money with demanding college tuitions. With no money left for ballet classes, high school student Elizabeth needs something else to fill her afternoons, and with the help of her social studies teacher—and maybe a little magic?—she gets a job at the New York Circulating Material Repository. The Repository houses all sorts of historical objects, including powerful magical ones, right out of the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales. And before long, Elizabeth is caught up in a web of magic and intrigue—and danger. Though the characters in this story leave a lot to be desired, anyone looking for vividly-imagined world of fantastical creatures and objects will find "The Grimm Legacy" to their liking. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:18)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "A Long Way from Chicago" by Richard Peck. Summary--Joey and Mary Alice are city slickers who spend summers with their Grandma Dowdel in her sleepy little Illinois town. But the excitement of Chicago, it turns out, pales in comparison to the excitement of the yearly hijinks at Grandma's. There are bullies to outwit, ornery neighbors to help, and justice to uphold—with a little illegal fishing and pie-tampering thrown in, just for good measure. Of course, it's all in the name of good, as Joey and Mary Alice quickly discover. And that makes "A Long Way from Chicago" not just a rip-roaring read, but also a story about an unusual Good Samaritan that's sure to leave you smiling. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:25)
