In this video, teenage students will be introduced to "The Year We Were Famous" by Carole Estby Dagg. Summary--What would you do if you needed $10,000--and fast? How about pulling a publicity stunt...like walking all the way across the United States? Of course, today, that might not sound like such a feat, but in 1896, a trek cross-country might as well have been a trek to the moon--especially for the daring mother-daughter duo at the heart of "The Year We Were Famous." Helga and Clara encountered more than physical obstacles as they walked from Washington State to New York City, but their journey remains a testament to what any courageous, persistent woman--or man--is capable of. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:28)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "Once Was Lost" by Sara Zarr. Summary Review--Samara (Sam) Taylor is not having a good summer. Her mom's in rehab after a DUI; her pastor father seems to have time for everyone except for his family; and Sam is dreading the announcement that there's no money for her to return to her beloved private school in the fall. That's why, when thirteen-year-old Jody Shaw goes missing from Sam's small town, Sam's world doesn't just teeter; it goes into full tilt. In spite of the fact that Sam's doubts in this story revolve around matters of faith, "Once Was Lost" isn't really so much a book about religion, as it is about what happens when the things we accept as undeniably true are suddenly called into question. Throw in a whole lot of suspense and a little romance, and you've got a book that's as thought-provoking as it is difficult to put down. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:22)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "Confessions of the Sullivan Sisters" by N. Standiford. Summary--Norrie, Jane, and Sassy didn't mean to get their family cut out of Grandma Lou (aka Almighty's) will. But one of them has been very, very bad. So bad, in fact, that Almighty is threatening an end to their family's life of luxury ... unless, of course, the bad girl confesses. So who's at fault? The daughter who gave up everything for love? The daughter who aired her family's dirty laundry? Or what about the daughter who killed her grandfather—and possibly proved her own immortality—in one fell swoop? You'll join with Almighty in being the judge in this funny, thoughtful story about how being yourself can both hurt and help the people you love. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:27)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "The Code of the Woosters" by P.G. Wodehouse. Summary Review--Bertie Wooster has a way of getting himself into trouble. Or rather, he has a way of letting other people get him into trouble, starting with his insufferable aunt. See, his aunt wants a particular cow creamer (a creamer shaped like a cow) that has value and importance of a rather epic nature. But when her sworn enemy gets his hands on the creamer first, she dispatches Bertie to retrieve the cow by whatever means necessary ... OR ELSE. "The Code of the Woosters" wouldn't win any awards for depth or meaning, but as extremely well-plotted comedies go, this is a fast-paced, entertaining read that's well worth checking out. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:22)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "Looking for Alaska" by John Green. Summary Review--Looking for Alaska doesn't have many goody-two-shoes characters. Or really any normal characters, either. Miles, Chip, and Alaska aren't weirdos. They're just quirky. They're not bad kids. But they do spend most of their time at Culver Creek Boarding School testing the limits—the limits of rules, of knowledge, of friendship. Even the limits of life ... though that doesn't work out so well in the end. The good news is that "Looking for Alaska" is as much about what Miles, Chip, and Alaska learn from their rule-breaking as it is about the rule-breaking itself. It's also as much about your journey as the reader as it is about theirs. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:23)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "Will Grayson, Will Grayson" by J. Green and D. Levithan. Summary Review--Will Grayson never expected to meet another Will Grayson. That goes for the other Will Grayson, too. And neither of them expected to have their lives utterly changed by the dynamic, dramatic Tiny Cooper and his anything-but-tiny persona. In fact, precisely because of Tiny, "Will Grayson, Will Grayson" is hardly your run-of-the-mill high school story. But one thing this book knows it's about is getting beneath the surface of things. And when you do, you'll see that while much of this story is atypical, its messages should readily resonate with high schoolers—and former high schoolers—everywhere. There is swearing and boy humor in this book. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:35)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "A Hope in the Unseen" by Ron Suskind. Summary--Teenager Cedric Jennings has two goals. 1. Not to be another statistic—another boy from the ghetto who ends up in jail ... or on the streets ... or dead. 2. To go to a top tier university. The problem is, hard work isn't enough to achieve that goal. Not when you're up against kids who go to decent schools in decent neighborhoods with decent housing and decent living conditions. But Cedric's not willing to make excuses—and he's not willing to give up. That's why his story will give you hope for your own future—and for his. This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:20)

In this video, teenage students will be introduced to "Deadly" by Julie Chibbaro. Summary--There's a mystery brewing in turn-of-the-century New York City. People are getting sick, and no one can figure out why. And the scariest part of the outbreak? It's deadly, of course. Enter spunky, 16-year-old Prudence, for whom the issues of life and death are already all too familiar. As assistant to an epidemiologist in the Department of Health and Sanitation, Prudence is soon wrapped up in the mystery of Mary Mallon, the immigrant woman who seems to be at the center of the epidemic. But are Prudence and her fellow scientists on to something, or is this a case of discrimination, not disease, run amok? This is a great resource to entice and encourage upper grade readers. (1:21)

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself by Harriet Jacobs (1813-1897) Harriet Jacobs' autobiography, written under the pseudonym Linda Brent, details her experiences as a slave in North Carolina, her escape to freedom in the north, and her ensuing struggles to free her children. The narrative was partly serialized in the New York Tribune, but was discontinued because Jacobs' depictions of the sexual abuse of female slaves were considered too shocking. It was published in book form in 1861. (Summary by Elizabeth Klett). (07:47:00)
