Armstrong Williams interviews Dr. Mana Angelou, poet, author, dancer, scripwriter, at her home in Winston-Salem, NC. He asks about her challenges. She says every day is a challenge. She is challenged to be honest, courageous, kind, and present in this interview. She talks about her life growing up. After being raped at age 7 she stopped speaking for 6 years. During that time she learned to read, and she read many books. She now has 55 doctorates and teaches all over the world. She came through many challenges because of love. Mrs. Flowers took her to the school library and told her to read. One day Mrs. Flowers told her she would never love poetry until she spoke it, until it comes through your lips. So Maya Angelou crawled under the store with the chickens in the soft dirt and she began to speak a poem. Part 1 of 5 (9:58)

In March 1865, Confederate forces experienced a flicker of hope for victory after hitting General William Sherman's Union troops hard in North Carolina. Johnson had a faulty map and the North won because of the limited knowledge Johnson had. Sherman now marches through the South, 650 miles, in 100 days. He captures three state capitals, loses very few men, and the South is left to realize that continuing the war is futile. (4:01)

Charles Hobson, producer of the PBS Great Performances program Harlem in Montmartre, brings to The New School the story of the jazz age in Paris between the First and Second World Wars, a fascinating but neglected piece of African American history. Inspired by William A. Shacks book of the same title, his documentary contains rare archival performance footage of James Europe, Josephine Baker, Sidney Bechet, Bricktop, Eugene Bullard, Django Reinhardt, and many more. Using photographs and film clips from the 1920s and 30s, Mr. Hobson discusses his film and the extraordinary role played by French artists and intellectuals in advancing the acceptance of jazz as a serious art form. Wisconsin flag: Starting at the top of a shield on a dark blue field is the state motto "Forward". Below it is a badger the state animal. A sailor and miner show that the people work on water and land. The shield in the center shows Wisconsin's support for the United States. In four sections surrounding the shield are representations of the state’s main industries: agriculture, mining, manufacturing and navigation. The cornucopia and pile of lead represent farm products and minerals. The flag law was amended in 1979 to include the name of the state and the date of statehood. The state anthem: “On, Wisconsin!” written by J. S. Hubbard and Charles D. Rosa and composed by William T. Purdy. With this video you can see the flag and hear the anthem. Good for all students. Armstrong Williams concludes his interview with Dr. Maya Angelou. He asks how she learned so many languages. "I have an eye and a soul for the human being. Languages are just devices human beings use to tell other human beings how they feel." Williams asks her about her initiatives in health issues, and about her cookbook. "I want my ideas in people's hands.... in their conversations.... That's the best thing I can do, as a child of God." "I pray to give my spirit back to God as clean as I can." Armstrong Williams thanks her for sharing her voice and her vision. Part 5 of 5 (9:00)

The Land Where the Blues Began is one of five films made from footage that Alan Lomax shot between 1978 and 1985 for the PBS American Patchwork series (1991). A self-described "song-hunter," Alan Lomax traveled the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s and 40s, at first with his father John Lomax, later in the company sometimes of black folklorists like John W. Work III, armed with primitive recording equipment and a keen love of the Delta's music heritage. Crisscrossing the towns and hamlets, jook joints and dance halls, prisons and churches, Lomax recorded such greats as Leadbelly, Fred McDowell, and Muddy Waters, all of whom made their debut recordings with him.In the late 1970s Lomax returned with filmmaker John Bishop and black folklorist Worth Long to make the film The Land Where the Blues Began. Shot on video tape, the film is narrated by Lomax and includes remarkable performances and stories by Johnny Brooks, Walter Brown, Bill Gordon, James Hall, William S. Hart, Beatrice and Clyde Maxwell, Jack Owens, Wilbert Puckett, J. T. Tucker, Reverend Caesar Smith, Bud Spires, Belton Sutherland, and Othar Turner The Association for Cultural Equity’s Alan Lomax Archive channel on YouTube additionally streams outtakes from this film: other strong performances by Walter Brown, Sam Chatmon, Clyde Maxwell, Jack Owens, Joe Savage, Bud Spires, Napoleon Strickland, and Othar Turner. Turner is also in Gravel Springs Fife and Drum on Folkstreams. (Description from site.) Hard to understand some accents. (58 minutes)

This video adapted from KTOO examines a virus outbreak that affected the Pacific herring population in Alaska's Prince William Sound in 1999. Because the herring play a very important part in both the local economy and the subsistence lifestyle practiced by the area's Alaska Native people, community members and scientists have sought to identify the cause of the virus. One hypothesis suggests that oil from the 1989 Exxon Valdez tanker spill, though not the direct cause of the virus, is a stressor that allowed the virus to take hold in the fish 10 years after the spill.
